Nothing is understated about The Tonga Room at The Fairmont San Francisco, a City by the Bay mainstay. Since 1945 loyalists have gathered for authentic Asian fare, umbrella-decorated drinks, and dramatic entertainment. A $1 million restoration later, this decadent tiki palace is now dressed up in snow leopard-topped bar stools and red leather banquettes set against a backdrop of orange and fuchsia and tribal wall art. The show is even splashier, coming to you from an indoor lagoon (once the hotel pool), where a 40-piece dance band performs underneath a Tahitian-style, thatch-covered barge. An eco-friendly dance floor was salvaged from the remains of the S.S. Forester, a lumber schooner that once sailed between San Francisco and the South Seas. And, to put you in the right mood for replicating those bygone voyages: Intermittent tropical rainstorms, thunder, and lightening is included. Umbrellas, anyone?
