Housed in what was originally an elaborate theater built in 1919 and called the Grand Splendid, the Recoleta-area El Ateneo Bookstore is something to write home about. To be sure, books have never looked so good as they do here, where the ground floor holds the bulk of a vast collection with the memorable building’s basement supporting music of all sorts. The second floor is reserved for heady pursuits (like science), and the still-intact theater boxes that flank the stage offer comfortable seating and a very special place to read. No doubt: This ain’t the old school library.
